Utrecht Ballroom Scene Voguing classes

During the Utrecht Queer Culture Festival, Utrecht Ballroom Scene is offering free Voguing classes for anyone curious to try it out. This year we’re teaching two styles: Vogue Fem and Old Way.

Voguing emerged from the ballroom culture of Harlem, New York, between the 1960s and 1980s. The Black and Latino LGBTQ community created this scene as a safe space to express themselves freely and find a sense of belonging.

Vogue Fem was developed by trans women within the ballroom community. The category centers femininity, more so than Old Way or New Way, and consists of five elements: catwalk, duckwalk, floor performance, hands, and spins & dips. Our weekly Vogue Fem classes have been taught since 2020 by Typhoon, Legendary European Father of the House of Basquiat and Legendary Founding Father of the Kiki House of Angels.

Old Way is one of the three main categories of Voguing and the original style, characterised by lines, symmetry, and shapes inspired by fashion poses, Egyptian hieroglyphs, and martial arts. Old Way is taught by Suzume 007, a dancer, choreographer, and ballroom community member who has won Grand Prizes across Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Germany since 2016.
